Winter Ball 2023
Join us for our annual formal Winter Ball! Open to both USLS Members and Non-members, the night includes a three-course meal, the prestigious Law Awards, and a chance to dance the night away! Professional photographers and our own personalised photo booth will be present to capture snapshots of the whole night.
Diversity & Inclusion Panel
Over the last few years, we have been grateful to speak with representatives from Freshfields, Clifford Chance, and Womble Bond Dickinson, who had informed us on the steps their Firms are taking to ensure there is diversity and inclusion within the workplace. This was also a great opportunity for our members to ask any questions they had about D&I, and express any concerns they may have for their future legal careers.

Commercial Awareness Competition

Our very own Commercial Awareness Competition may be the place for you.
Entrants t are o write a commercial-style essay to a given question. These essays were then judged by our Commercial Awareness Officer with the top 10, where in the past, we have sent them off to be judged by representatives from our previous sponsors, BPP Law School.
Freshfields Application Workshop
Want to make a captivating application that will grab recruiters attention for all the right reasons?
Join us as representatives from Freshfields cover the core aspects of good application technique, top tips and do’s and don’ts there was also an interactive section which looked in depth at two of the most common questions on legal application forms. The takeaway from this session was that the application is the most important interaction with a potential employer and also the hardest to get right so it is important to spend time making it the best it can possibly be.

LLB to TC Talk by Burgees Salmon
Representatives from Burges Salmon visited our campus to give a talk on the journey from completing your LLB Law degree to securing a well-deserved Training Contract. The event was truly insightful for first years who got to learn about the general application process and what can be expected from a Training Contract. The firm highlighted their own positive work culture and spoke about some of their specific opportunities such as the ability to take a gap year between graduation and starting your Training Contract.

Clifford Chance held an exclusive ‘How to Secure a Training Contract’ webinar for Southampton Law Society members. Their Graduate Recruitment team provided an opportunity to hear more about firm gave some top tips for the application process.
Pro Bono Quiz by Womble Bond Dickinson
Our Pro Bono Quiz Night, sponsored by Womble Bond Dickinson, sold out and was a massive success. The event follow a classic ‘Pub Quiz’ format meaning that it was accessible for all and allowed us to raise £203 for LawWorks.
Banners 2019 sponsored by Womble Bond Dickinson
Our annual Banners tournament is a charity event in memory of former Southampton Law School student, Arijit Banerjee, who sadly passed away due to mental health reasons. This year saw a variety of teams compete in Netball and Football tournaments with and Glen Eyre Lost Girls Netball and BusSoc Football becoming reigning champions. Many thanks to Womble Bond Dickinson for fielding both a Netball and Football team on the day and sponsoring the event. In total we raised £250 for Solent Mind, a mental health charity in the local area.
Diversity in Law by HSF
Herbert Smith Freehills sent some of their Southampton University alumni to talk about the firm’s approach to diversity and inclusion. Members learnt about their ‘Leading for Inclusion 2018-21’ strategy, their diversity networks and their gender targets. The talk was followed by an informal networking session where everyone was free to ask more general questions about life as a trainee/associate at Herbert Smith Freehills.
You be the Judge Quiz with ULaw
A LawSoc x ULaw Quiz Night with a legal twist saw teams working out the verdict reached by judges in various scenarios, without requiring any specific legal knowledge. The event was good fun for all with free drinks won by the winning teams at the end of each round and the overall winners walking away with their own gavel.
Non Law to Law by Reed Smith
Reed Smith kindly hosted an event for any students who are not currently studying law but are interested in a legal career. The event provided the perfect opportunity for students to ask questions and then network with Reed Smith’s representatives who have been through the process.
University Challenge with Clifford Chance
The University of Southampton Law Society organised and hosted the first 'Law Society University Challenge' in Southampton. Law Society teams from Winchester, Portsmouth, Surrey, UWE & SOAS competed against us with the hope of being crowned the winning team. Congratulations to our Southampton Law Society team for winning the competition: Lucas, Maya, Kelly & Benita we are all so proud. As the event was sponsored by Clifford Chance they were lucky enough to win £50 vouchers and goodie bags as prizes! The event was a big success so we look forward to trying to retain our title next year.
